Waiting on Wednesday: The 2012 YA Debuts Part II Edition

Yeah, the last edition was getting REALLY long. So, I decided to split it up.

Enchanted
Alethea Kontis
Harcourt Children's Books
[May 8, 2012]
It isn’t easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.
When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past—and hers?

PRINCES AND PRINCESS AND LOVE AND THE FROG AND THE PRINCESS RETELLING. Guys. The excitement. I cannot handle. Also, I want to make out with this cover.

Masque of the Red Death
Bethany Griffin
HarperCollins Children's Books
[April 24, 2012]
Everything is in ruins.

A devastating plague has decimated the population. And those who are left live in fear of catching it as the city crumbles to pieces around them.

So what does Araby Worth have to live for?

Nights in the Debauchery Club, beautiful dresses, glittery make-up . . . and tantalizing ways to forget it all.

But in the depths of the club—in the depths of her own despair—Araby will find more than oblivion. She will find Will, the terribly handsome proprietor of the club. And Elliott, the wickedly smart aristocrat. Neither boy is what he seems. Both have secrets. Everyone does.

And Araby may find something not just to live for, but to fight for—no matter what it costs her.

How wonderfully creepy does this sound? I also read a blog post by Bethany and it got me more interested in her writing.

The Treachery of Beautiful Things
Ruth Frances Long
Penguin Group USA
[August 16, 2012]
The trees swallowed her brother whole. And Jenny was there to see it. Years later, when she returns to the woods where Tom was taken to say good-bye at last, she finds herself lured into a world where stunning beauty masks the most treacherous of evils, and strange and dangerous creatures await—creatures who seem to consider her the threat. Among them is Jack, mercurial and magnetic, with allegiances that shift as much as his moods. Determined to find her brother, with or without Jack’s help, Jenny struggles to navigate a faerie world where nothing is what it seems, no one is who they say, and she’s faced with a choice between salvation or sacrifice—and not just her own.
Faeries and mysteries and woods and gorgeous dresses. But, I don't know how I can wait until August for this one.

Illuminate
Aimee Agretsi
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
[March 6, 2012]
Haven Terra is a brainy, shy high school outcast. But everything begins to change when she turns sixteen. Along with her best friend Dante and their quiet and brilliant classmate Lance, she is awarded a prestigious internship in the big city— Chicago—and is sent to live and work at a swanky and stylish hotel under the watchful eyes of a group of gorgeous and shockingly young-looking strangers: powerful and alluring hotel owner Aurelia Brown; her second-in-command, the dashing Lucian Grove; and their stunning but aloof staff of glamazons called The Outfit.

As Haven begins falling for Lucian, she discovers that these beautiful people are not quite what they seem. With the help of a mysterious book, she uncovers a network of secret passageways from the hotel’s jazz-age past that leads her to the heart of the evil agenda of Aurelia and company: they’re in the business of buying souls. Will they succeed in wooing Haven to join them in their recruitment efforts, or will she be able to thwart this devilish set’s plans to take the souls of her classmates on prom night at the hotel?

Illuminate is an exciting saga of a teen’s first taste of independence, her experience in the lap of luxury, and her discovery she may possess strength greater than she ever knew.
I just love the sound of this one. Devils and soul buying and hotels and just...yummy. Also that dress.*swoon*

At first, I was like "...Meh." Reading this description, I still kind of am. But at some point I must have stumbled across something that made me go "Yup. This book. Yup" because I proceeded to add it to goodreads...so there you go.

  2. So many choices!! I am super-curious whether The Princess and the Frog can be pulled off as awesome - love the cover, for sure, but can a frog be amazing?! This is a question I intend to get to the bottom of. :-) Great choices.
