Book Mix: Code Name Verity

So I love books and I love music and I love making playlists for books, and seeing as I haven't posted a review* in a while, I thought I'd post a playlist for one of my favourite books.

The Book

Code Name Verity
by Elizabeth Wein

Summary: Oct. 11th, 1943-A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. Its pilot and passenger are best friends. One of the girls has a chance at survival. The other has lost the game before it's barely begun.

When "Verity" is arrested by the Gestapo, she's sure she doesn't stand a chance. As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she's living a spy's worst nightmare. Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution.

As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the wrecked fuselage of their plane. On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, confronting her views on courage, failure and her desperate hope to make it home. But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy?
If you haven't read this book, go read it! And even if it's slow at first and takes you a while to get into it, stick with it because it's so worth it.

The Music

(Kathryn Prescott as Maddie, Freya Mavor as Verity - they have the right nationalities too)

This was a hard one to find songs for (mostly because it's hard to find songs that fit that aren't about romantic love), so with some it's just the feel of the song that made me think of the book or a line or two of the lyrics matched the characters (I was going to post it on 8tracks, but I couldn't find half the songs, so I made a youtube playlist instead).

"It's like falling in love, discovering your best friend."
- Code Name Verity

Part One - Verity:

1. Passenger - Feather on the Clyde
"Well I would swim but the river is so wide
And I’m scared I won’t make it to the other side
Well God knows I’ve failed but He knows that I’ve tried
I long for something that’s safe and warm
But all I have is all that is gone
I’m as helpless and as hopeless as a feather on the Clyde"
(Plus, bonus points for being about a Scottish city)

2. Kodaline - One Day
"One day it's here and then it's gone
How are you still holding on?
How are you still holding on?"

3. The Lumineers - Stubborn Love
"She'll lie and steal, and cheat,
And beg you from her knees
Make you think she means it this time"

4. Imagine Dragons - Bleeding Out
"So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll bleed out for you"

5. Bastille - Overjoyed
"When you listen to my words
I see them sinking in
I see them crawling underneath your skin
Words are all we have"

6. Sleeping At Last - Moon
"KISS ME, HARDY! Kiss me, QUICK!"
- Code Name Verity

Part Two - Maddie:

7. Lucy Spraggan - Lighthouse
"I believe in you,
you believe in me
You’re the lighthouse in the storm"

8. Birdy - Wings
"In the moment we're lost and found
I just wanna be by your side
if these wings could fly"

9. Daughter - The Woods
"We were trying to stop the winter
killing all it could."

10. Bastille - Pompeii
"How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes,
does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?"

11. Ingrid Michaelson - Keep Breathing
"All that I know is I'm breathing.
All I can do is keep breathing."

12. Sleeping At Last - Sun
"I guess space and time
takes violent things
angry things,
and makes them kind. [...]
Let there be light, let there be light, let me be right.”

Annnd now I kind of want to reread the book.

If anyone read this, would you want more posts like this? And if you would, are there any particular books you'd like a playlist for?

*I have been reading, I've just not been finishing books. Like, I think I've started and partially read about 5 books since I last posted a review.
